Artist-in-Residence

Mount Vernon Artist-in-Residence

The Mount Vernon Area Arts Council launched the Artist-in-Residence (or AIR) program in Spring of 2023. The Council hopes to  increase awareness of the visual arts with this professional recognition that complements the sister program of Poet Laureate by bringing these arts for free to the area community.

The artist’s responsibilities will in part include creating and displaying an original creative artwork at an MVAAC-sponsored event and organizing at least one community outreach program to celebrate visual art each year of the appointment.

The artist will be recognized as the Artist-in-Residence with an annual stipend of $500 with a  materials support amount of $250 per annum. In addition, the AIR will receive a complimentary artist booth at the Lincoln Highway Arts Festival in September and the support and promotion  by MVAAC. The AIR is a 2-year appointment.

Sarah Fitzgerald was selected at the inaugural Artist-in-Residence, beginning Spring of 2023. She has displayed her artwork at the Lincoln Highway Arts Festival and the Cole Library gallery as part of her Artist-in-Residence duties. She also started a series of meet-ups for local artists and creatives.

Angie Heuton has been named the 2025-2026 Artist-in-Residence.

2025-2026 Artist-in-Residence, Angie Heuton

Mount Vernon artist Angie Heuton has been selected as the 2025-26 Artist-in-Residence (AIR). Initiated in 2023 by MVAAC, the AIR program will provide Heuton and her work a platform within the Mount Vernon-Lisbon community.

Together with Cornell’s Cole Library, Heuton will continue supporting Creatives Connect, a monthly gathering of artists as well as organizing programs and workshops for various groups. “I’m hoping to organize a program for nursing home residents as well as something at the Lester Buresh Wellness Center,” says Heuton. Like her predecessor Sarah Fitzgerald, she also plans to have an exhibit of her work.

“Once again we are excited about the opportunities for community engagement in the arts through MVAAC’s Artist-in-Residence Program,” says Carr. “Angie is a well-respected artist working primarily in watercolor on shaped paper to create realistic, three-dimensional pieces that include butterflies and moths. Her work is featured in multiple local galleries.”

Heuton sees her new role as ‘a steward of culture in the community - an ambassador representing the arts.’
